Tribute to My Father

This gallery is dedicated to my father, Pete Sabella. As many of you know, my father was an amazing News Photographer for over 44 years until his passing in October of 2008. When I look back upon his images today, I am truly amazed at the stories they told and how he captured those moments in time like no other. Unfortunately those were sometimes the worst moments of someone's life and he so often had to work in very difficult situations to capture the true essence of what he was witnessing.

He shared his passion for photography with me as a kid growing up. Because of this, I dabbled in photography as a hobby throughout most of my life, often drawing upon times I spent with him at major sporting events such as Steelers & Pirates games, accident scenes or in the darkroom learning his craft. He often referred to his images as "art" and without a doubt, they truly were. I loved processing and printing my own B&W film and wish I had the means to do it today. As of now, my main interests are in photographing sports (previously my daughter's teams, but now high school and youth), family & friends, nature and anything else that looks like it would make good "art". My first camera was a Nikon FM2 which my father bought me when I went away to college. I still have that camera and will never let it go. Currently I'm shooting a Nikon D3s & D700 with a variety of high quality Nikon lenses and have been very satisfied with the results so far.

Please check back often as I plan to copy as many of his images as possible and post them here for everyone to see. Simply put...he was the best and will always be in my eyes. He had such a passion for his trade and he shared that passion every chance he got. The images below of him with my Mom, or him with my niece, are just a couple examples of how much he loved his family, his passion for photography and sharing his knowledge. He will be truly missed.

With that said, I dedicate this site and every image I take to my father. He was the best and while I will never be as good as he was, I truly hope he would be proud of the "art" that he sees on my site.

  • My father in his youth. Believed to be a school picture from when he attended St. Joseph's Catholic School
  • St. Joseph Graduation picture. Dad is the first person in the 2nd Row on the far right hand side.
  • Dad in his early days standing outside the darkroom at the Beaver County Times and checking out some negs.
  • This image is the one that most people recall when thinking of pictures of my father. There is a much wider variety they recall when thinking of images he took. This was a studio shot that was often used anytime a picture of Dad was needed for the paper or some other photographic organization. This image now appears on his headstone
  • This is one of our favorite images of my father and mother, Joanne. Dad loved my mother dearly, he had a passion for photography and really enjoyed motorcycles (pictured is one of his old Honda's). This image captured all three which I always thought was so cool. What is most interesting is that we never knew who took the image until the day of my father's funeral when Mr. Carl Stein (also a photographer) came to pay his respects and informed me that it was he who took the picture. My mother confirmed that to be accurate so I thank Carl for a wonderful image and memory of my parents in their younger days.
  • This is so typical of my Dad. He was very creative when it came to getting the right shot. This image was taken by Mr. Pete Pavlovich who worked for the News Tribune back in the day and was their Chief of Staff. Dad used to be a stringer (paid per photo) for them prior to being hired full time by the Times, but he and Pete remained friends through the years. Pete sent this image to my Dad with a wonderful little note teasing my Dad about having two cameras, an umbrella, a white car with a yellow light on top, but still not a "Chief". Good natured ribbing amongst friends.
  • Copy of the photo and blurb the Beaver County Times ran when my Dad was named the Photographer of the Year by the Press Photographers Association of Pittsburgh. As you can read in the clip as well, his portfolio included first place in sports which was also named Best In Show as well as Honorable Mention awards in picture story, animals and spot news.
  • Dad posing with his boss at the time, Rudi Schunk, and a couple awards they won. My father won so many awards in his career including a Photographer of the Year award which also earned him an invitation to judge a national photography contest at the White House.
  • That is my father on the right hand side holding a movie camera in his hand waiting for the parade to come through. We think this is in the town of Beaver, but haven't confirmed that yet.
  • One of my Dad's proudest moments was teaching his first granddaughter Theresa, how to take pictures at a parade in New Brighton. This image was captured by Mr. Carl Stein who also captured the image of my Dad with my Mom, his camera and motorcycle which can be seen early on in this gallery.
  • Dad and Theresa laughing and having a great time and Mr. Stein catches them in action. Dad definitely had a great time teaching his granddaughter how to work a camera.
  • We have no clue who took this image of my Dad or where. Appears to be some sort of diner or restaurant and my guess is these are photographic collectibles he picked up at a camera show or auction.
  • A great studio image that my father took of his oldest son, Charles.
  • Another great studio image of his 2nd son, Pete Sabella Jr, taken by my Dad.
  • This is one of the most memorable images that my father took of someone in our family. This image is of my brother Pete, who fell asleep on my grandmother's porch. Such a simple and peaceful image of my brother that takes us all back to our younger years.
  • We found this image in a envelope of stuff we went through. It's a smaller version of the previous image that my father "colorized". We never knew he did this sort of work. This is the only one like this we've seen where he colored a black & white image.
  • There was a break in the action and Dad snuck a picture of me while we were covering a Pittsburgh Steelers game. I'm guessing I might have been in 9th grade. Still love the Red Sox, but the huge glasses and Members Only jacket just had to go!
  • These next few images of my father's are from some 35mm color slides we came across of the Kenwood Hotel Fire which occurred in the summer of 1976. The Kenwood Hotel used to reside on the corner of 3rd Avenue & 5th Street in New Brighton. This image was taken from across the street along 3rd Avenue. The tan building to the left was a Foxes Pizza. Now there is an Advanced Auto and Family Video at this intersection.

He was not only a great photographer, but a great man. He is the reason I took an interest in photography at such a young age. I always did and still do admire his talent and persona.
