These are the images captured during the Quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class A Playoffs between the 12th Seeded Lady Lions of New Brighton and the 4th Seeded Lady Lancers of Neshannock HS held on 10.23.13 at Seneca Valley High School. I know I said this for the last game, but seriously….if you missed this one, shame on you as this was a great match between two division rivals who have gone back and forth over the years. The Lady Lancers jumped out to a early 1-0 lead only about a minute into the match and with about 25 minutes to go in the first half pulled out to a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Lions would not go away. Maya Watkins scored her first of 4 goals on a great assist by Elaina Smith only 30 seconds later to bring the score to 2-1. Later in the half, Maya Watkins netted her second goal, again assisted by Elaina Smith, to bring this match to a 2-2 draw as the half came to a end. In the second half, it was 15 minutes into the half before Neshannock pulled ahead 3-2 on a great high chip shot. New Brighton would not go away as they again tied the match 3-3 only a few minutes later as Watkins and Smith connected again to gather their 3rd goal and assist respectively. Then with barely over 5 minutes left, the Lady Lion midfielders or defense played a long ball that was controlled by Maya Watkins who then took advantage of a defender who over-committed to the left of the goalkeeper. A couple quick touches to the right created the space she needed as she ripped a shot past a challenging Lady Lancer goalie for the 4-3 lead. With barely over 2 minutes left, New Brighton standout goalkeeper Kailey Bonner had to leave the match due to a collision during a Neshannock offensive attack. Backup goalkeeper Hanna Csoman came in and with the help of defensive superstar Leslie Miller, made a great save on a hard charge by Neshannock just inches from the goal to help preserve the Lady Lion Victory and advancement into the WPIAL Semi-Finals. Next up for the Lady Lions is a WPIAL Semi-Final match up with the #1 Seeded Team Greensburg Central Catholic HS to be held at Hampton High School at 6pm on 10.29.13. Good Luck Lady Lions!
